Sunday, June 14, 1868 - "Foremost captain of his time..."

This is a fine warm day.
The folks are to Church to day. A. Liddle was down to Church to day.

Gen. Grant
“The statesman warrior, moderate, resolute,
Whole in himself, A common good;
Our greatest, yet with least pretense –
Great in council and great in war.
Foremost captain of his time,
Rich in saving common Sense.
And, as the greats only are,
In his simplicity Sublime.”
T.L. Tennyson’s Ode.*

*This is a variation on Tennyson’s “Ode on the Death of Dorothy Wellington.”
